Rutledge History

Site of Andrew Johnson's Tailor Shop in Rutledge.Rutledge was named in honor of General George Rutledge of Sullivan County. During the period of its early formation, county business was often conducted at Bunch's Tavern in Rutledge, built in 1797. Washburn community was briefly the county seat but the title transferred to Rutledge when its courthouse was completed in 1801. Andrew Jackson opened his first tailor shop in Rutledge and a replica of the shop was erected in the 1920s in front of the Grainger County Courthouse near the intersection of Hwy 92 and Rutledge Pike.

The Tennessee Historical Commission has erected two historical markers on the lawn of the old courthouse--one for Andrew Jackson's tailor shop and the other for Dewitt Clinton Senter.

Henderson's A.M.E.Z. Church in Rutledge is a nationally recognized historical location.
